Surely no responsible person in today’s society would deny the value of an education! The statistical data is overwhelming. There is a direct correlation between the amount of education you have and your income. While there are exceptions to that rule, by and large it holds true.

Suppose your formal education is over, what can you do to continue the growth and learning processes? I’m going to make three suggestions that will make a substantial difference in your growth. Number one, learn one new word every day. Georgetown Medical School conducted a comprehensive study and learned that in 100% of the cases, when the vocabulary went up, I.Q. also went up – no exceptions. Your understanding of what you read and hear is, to a very large degree, determined by your vocabulary, so improve your vocabulary daily. By doing so you improve your understanding of the world and your effectiveness expands. There are many resources available to increase your vocabulary. Here is one online resource: dictionary.com.

Number two, read something of significance every day. Not just novels or news or entertainment, but something related to your job, profession or personal growth. If you are an average reader of 220 words per minute, by reading just 20 minutes a day you will have read twenty 200-page books in a year’s time. That gives you a considerable edge over most people in this country. The typical American reads only two books a year, so your advantage will be pronounced. Need a good book? Click here.

Number three, take advantage of all the information on podcasts and downloads during your driving time. Many educational programs are available online and you can learn anything from goal-setting to Chinese art and the Bible. You can take courses in vocabulary-building, financial management, sales training, leadership development and a host of other things. Subscribe to my weekly inspirational podcast now.

Your business network is a priceless resource that can bring you great success if you constantly work to grow and cultivate it. Like a client database, a business network can provide you with valuable referrals that you can turn into profitable transactions.

A successful business network also allows you to become a trusted advisor to your clients. When clients ask you to recommend a reliable mechanic or contractor, there is a good chance that they will think of you first when someone they know needs to buy or sell a home.

If worked properly, your network can generate a whopping 10 to 20% return annually. Translated, this could mean that 10 to 20% of your client base will either refer you to someone else or do business with you every year. Crunch the numbers and see if it doesn’t make sense to be in touch with them monthly!

This month’s Item of Value is about how to build and maintain your business network. I have included tips for how to add business owners to your network, where to go to meet like-minded professionals and how to become a trusted advisor to your clients.

On the reverse side, you will find a guide to help sort your business contacts into appropriate groups, as well as a worksheet to list the professionals involved in a typical real estate transaction. This is designed to help you build your business network and directory so you can be the hub of your client database.

I’m here to help you make the most of your business network!

Imagine there is a bank account that credits your account each morning with $86,400. It carries over no balance from day to day.

Every evening the bank deletes whatever part of the balance you failed to use during the day. What would you do? Draw out every cent, of course?

Each of us has such a bank. It’s name is TIME.

Every morning, it credits you with 86,400 seconds.

Every night it writes off as lost, whatever of this you have failed to invest to a good purpose.

It carries over no balance. It allows no over draft. Each day it opens a new account for you. Each night it burns the remains of the day.

If you fail to use the day’s deposits, the loss is yours. There is no drawing against “tomorrow.”

You must live in the present on today’s deposits. Invest it so as to get from it the utmost in health, happiness and success!

The clock is running!! Make the most of today.

To realize the value of ONE YEAR, ask a student who failed a grade.

To realize the value of ONE MONTH, ask a mother who has given birth to a premature baby.

To realise the value of ONE WEEK, ask the editor of a weekly newspaper.

To realise the value of ONE HOUR, ask the lovers who are waiting to meet.

To realize the value of ONE MINUTE, ask a person who just missed a train.

To realize the value of ONE SECOND, ask someone who just avoided an accident.

To realize the value of ONE MILLISECOND, ask the person who won a silver medal at the Olympics.

Treasure every moment that you have! And treasure it more because you shared it with someone special, special enough to spend your time with. And remember time waits for no one.

Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That’s why its called the present.

This month I have sent a valuable resource called “Seal the Deal: How to Negotiate Effectively.” It includes a number of tips specifically for real estate professionals, who must often negotiate with their own clients well before they work to strike a deal on their behalf. It also introduces a proven listening technique that can help improve your chances of a successful negotiation.

The greatest sale made in real estate typically happens at a listing appointment. If you learn what should be done at this “sale,” you will do more business.

Great negotiating skills lead to more closed transactions, more satisfied clients and a more profitable referral-based business.

Wouldn’t you like to make even better first impressions, close more deals, and build lasting relationships that will lead to repeat business and referrals?

We all have a natural communication style that makes it easier to connect with some individuals and more difficult to relate to others. This month’s resource explains how it’s possible to adjust our manner of speaking and sales approach to meet each client’s distinct communication needs.

In a recent workshop, we practiced the “seven secrets to being a great conversationalist,” and everyone felt better equipped to engage in more meaningful prospecting. If this tool will help you contact me so I can schedule a time to help you get it.

Practicing this strategy could help you improve this essential set of skills. Please let me know if there’s any way that I can help.

Sincerely,

It’s important to let people know that they have a fleeting opportunity to buy property and enjoy reasonable housing payments and other financial benefits well into the future.

This month I have sent a piece that addresses the prospects for real estate in 2012 and suggests ways that you can take advantage of the current housing situation. Leveraging today’s low rates is a start, and offering your long-term perspective and a little financial wisdom to first-time buyers will position you as an experienced industry professional they can trust.

Your real estate career will blossom when you take the approach that daily your top priority is to generate more leads. If you learn to be a lead generator your income is predictable.

Be prepared to provide up-to-date information as our local market changes and you’ll become the resource your clients need to make confident decisions. Remember I am here to help.

The Uranium Thief

One thing people always cite as a drawback of nuclear power is the possibility of the materials falling into the wrong hands. Amazingly, this exact situation already happened in the 1970s, when two drums of enriched uranium were stolen from a power plant in North Carolina.

In 1979, David Learned Dale, a contract employee at the GE power plant in Wilmington, NC, infiltrated a restricted area and managed to wheel out two 5-gallon drums of low-enriched Uranium. Then, he casually placed them in the trunk of his car and drove away. From there, Dale attempted to blackmail the plant for $100,000. He did it by sending the head of the plant a small vial containing some of the nuclear material, along with a letter explaining that if he wasn’t paid he would send similar vials to all the anti-nuclear groups in the country—a move that would be sure to shut the GE plant down for good. It was an audacious plan, and one that might very well have worked. However, instead of paying Dale his hush money, the plant got in touch with the authorities and a special team of investigators known as the Nuclear Emergency Response Team were brought in on the case. After a brief investigation, Dale was eventually found out and apprehended.

In a career in real estate you could earn much more than the blackmail amount in the story. The struggle for most licensees is learning the secrets of the top agents before the window of opportunity passes. The secret of success is learning how to build a lead generation system that could produce 30 + transactions annually.
